Oahu hikeOne of the best activities you can engage in when visiting the Hawaiian Islands is to take an Oahu hike. The island of Oahu has about fifty hiking trails. Of these, 33 are considered major trails. They vary in difficulty from novice to advanced and in length from two to fifteen miles.

Oahu is partitioned into districts. The Leeward coast is on the western side of the island and includes the Waianae Mountain Range and the Honolulu Forest Reserve. Novice hikers can try the four mile Kaena Point Trail, an easy shoreline walk. Two trails for advanced hikers are situated in the Waianae Range. These are the Kamaileunu and the Waianae-Kaala Trails, both crossing ridges and between five to seven miles in length.

Mount WashingtonTwo years ago I climbed Mount Washington on a clear and warm day and had magnificent views and encountered no mishaps - one of those rare perfect days on a mountain that has the reputation for experiencing the world’s worst weather.

matterhornWith thousands of miles of trails crisscrossing the Alps as they arc through France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Germany and Slovenia, you could easily spend a lifetime hiking here. But the Haute Route, linking Chamonix, France, to Zermatt, Switzerland, delivers more scenic splendour in one achievable trek than any other. It takes you through some of the highest hikeable terrain in Europe, passes beneath ten of the Alps' twelve highest peaks and connects the tallest, Mont Blanc (4808m), with the Matterhorn (4478m). Weaving through pine forests sprinkled with wild mushrooms and berries, you'll frequently emerge onto grassy slopes where herders graze their cows, goats and sheep throughout the summer.

The origin of the trails goes back to prehistoric time, when they were established by the first inhabitants of the island and served as the only means of transport and communications. Later, when the Spaniards conquered the island they expanded the network of footpaths and it connected all the villages with each other and connected the villages with the capital, Santa Cruz.
