Just as the materials, techniques, and styles of hiking footwear have changed so has the answer to this question. Today, many types of hiking footwear are wearable "out of the box." I'll discuss the issue in more detail below, but the rule of thumb is the heavier duty the boot, the more breaking in you will need to do.

Roughing it in the woods holds many different adventures, some of which can be very humbling, like using the bathroom...without, ahh, the bathroom. If one is at a campground or state/national park, there may be actual facilities available. However, in an emergency or if one is smack dab in the middle of nowhere, it's best to plan ahead and be ready for bodily functions. There are some, well, techniques, as well as basic knowledge, that will make things much easier.

Wilderness survival: Finding water to drink

It is a fact that humans can survive much longer without food than without water. Our bodies are composed of more than 50% water. We lose about two liters every day in breathed out moisture, urine, bowel movements and sweat. We must replace the lost fluids, but since most foods contain up to 70% water, we do not have to drink two liters each day if we are consuming a normal diet.

The difference between internal frame and external frame backpacks

Those words describe the major differences between these two categories of backpacks: internal frames have the frame (or frame sheet) on the inside while external frames have the frame on the outside.
